Peet's Coffee

Life in Portland just got a little bit better, as Peet's opened a new location at 36th and Hawthorne. Not walking distance from our new place, but definitely closer than the ones in Lake Oswego and on NE Broadway.

Portland is feeling more and more like Berkeley everyday.

Back by the Bay

It took about 30 minutes for my welcome back to the Bay Area moment. BART pulled into the 16th Street Station, and on ambled a very large black woman pushing a shopping cart with a sweatered chihuahua in it. You just don't see that in Portland, especially in Eastmoreland. You just don't.

Fat Albert's

Since I don't eat eggs (I wish I could say this was an ethical decision of some sort -- I feel sorry for the little embryos? -- but in reality I just can't stand that sulphuric smell), I consider myself somewhat of a french toast and waffle connoisseur.

So believe me when I say that the french toast with fresh berries at Fat Albert's is amazing. And amazingly rich. I passed on the whipped cream and went with my standard powdered sugar (is there any other way to eat french toast?), which created a delightfully sugary bliss of berry juice and sugar.

I highly recommend a visit while berries are still in season, although maybe this special will stick around longer.
